CDE postdoc presents US Mexico Migration Dynamics

Happy New Year everyone!

Fernando Riosmena (who is a postdoc in the Center for Demography and Ecology) will present his work titled "Mexico - U.S. Migration Dynamics: A Sequential, Duration-Period Approach," tomorrow at noon in 3470 Sewell Social Sciences. He will be the first of an exciting group of presenters in the Sociology Department's Race & Ethnicity Training Seminar this semester.Please come and/or take a look at the schedule. Seeking Spring 2007 presenters

The Wisconsin Migration Research Group seeks volunteers to present their in-progress research to the group for January through May. We are taking sign-ups now. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies are welcome from graduate students as well as faculty at UW-Madison. The time for our meetings next semester will be announced once presenters are finalized. Please e-mail mnguyen [at] ssc.wisc.edu

Congratulations to new steering committee member, Nancy Nguyen, a graduate in the Southeast Asian Studies program. We are currently seeking one more individual to serve one- and two-year terms on the committee.

Latino Immigrant Health

The Wisconsin Migration Research Group meeting on Oct 25 at 4 pm will be in Sewell Social Sciences Room 8146, which is down the hall from the Sociology dept office on the 8th Floor.

Our first research presentation of the group will be on "Latino Immigrant Health: An Intergenerational Analysis" by Steven Elías Alvarado, Dept of Sociology, UW-Madison.

Next Meeting
The Wisconsin Migration Research Group will be meeting on Wed, Oct 25 @ 4pm, location TBA. (Hopefully though, we can get the Havens Centre seminar room again in Sewell).

Leadership: Steering Committee
In order to keep the group going and strengthen our leadership infrastructure, we are currently looking for two members to join the steering committee. You will work closely with Ted Gerber, Steven Alvarado, Vinthany Souvannarath, and Mytoan Nguyen. We'd like to encourage members outside of the Dept of Sociology to volunteer for this leadership position.

European University Institute and other announcments

The European University Institute's Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies has a website offering migration resources for scholars and students working on this type of research: http://www.iue.it/RSCAS/Research/MIGRES.

Northwestern University's Center for African American and the Program in Asian American Studies will be convening a symposium called Point and Counterpoint on April 20 and 21, 2007. The call for papers went out, contact: asianamerican@northwestern.edu and k-jaffer@northwestern.edu for details, the deadline is November 1, 2006 to send paper proposals.

1st Fall 2006 Meeting in Sewell Social Sciences, Room 8108 (Havens Center)

The Wisconsin Im/Migration Group will be holding it's first meeting of the semester on Wednesday September 27 at 1pm in 8108 Sewell Social Science(Havens Center Room). This meeting will mostly consist of updates andplanning for the semester and will also feature our faculty advisor, Ted Gerber (Sociology). This is an exciting time for us as our research topic continues to grow insocial and political interest both in the US and abroad. The inter-disciplinary format of our collectivity offers a uniquely diversebreadth of perspective and expertise. This, our second, year should seeat least as much growth as our last.I look forward to seeing all of you there. Please forward this as widely as possible as we are always on the lookout for new recruits. If you can't make it this time, don't worry - we will e-mail and post both the agenda and minutes.

Hello Migrationists!

This is the temporary & unofficial homepage of the Wisconsin Migration Research Group. We are a student organization based at the University of Wisconsin at Madison for individuals interested in the study of migration and immigrants. We are a cross-disciplinary research and discussion group from different social science and humanities fields and different methods and approaches to the study of migration. We have members from the fields of sociology, political science, anthropology, English, geography, education, human development, and many other departments.

FACULTY SPONSOR

Our faculty advisor is Professor Ted Gerber in the Department of Sociology at UW-Madison. Professor Gerber is teaching the Sociology seminar on migration in Fall 2006 for graduate students.

There are a number of faculty on the UW-Madison campus who conduct research related to the study of migration and migration processes, and an even longer list of graduate student researchers who are interested in enlarging the space to do such research.
